About

Suresh a/l Narayanen is a lecturer and researcher at the Centre for Global Archaeological Research (CGAR), Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), Penang. He was a recipient of Academic Staff Training Scheme (ASTS) and obtained his Ph.D in Archaeology from USM in 2017. He also received a Bachelor of Social Science in Anthropology and Sociology and Master of Arts in Archaeology from the same university in 2008 and 2011 respectively.

He has been attached to USM archaeology since 2008 where he worked as a Research Assistant from 2008 to 2009 and then as a Research Officer from 2011 to 2012 for Projek Arkeologi Zaman Neolitik di Sabah. Prior to that, he was a minor student at CGAR between 2006 and 2008.

His research interests primarily lie in the social and cultural history of ancient and traditional pottery in Malaysia and Southeast Asia. He also specialises in the field of ethnography and ethnoarchaeology with special concentration on pottery-making.

His experience in the field of archaeology includes working with the Indonesian archaeologists where he assisted them to excavate and analyse prehistoric pottery found at the archaeological site of Tincho in South Sulawesi in 2011. A year before that, he joined the USM archaeology team to Bosnia Herzegovina to excavate and study artefacts found at the ‘Bosnian Pyramid Complex’. In Malaysia, he actively involved in the documentation study of prehistoric rock art of Gua Tambun, Ipoh in 2009, archaeological excavation of Gua Kain Hitam B, Sarawak in 2010, archaeological survey of Gunung Mulu National Park, Sarawak in 2011, rescue excavation at Kuan Yin Temple, Penang in 2012, ethnography study of wood coffin tradition in Kinabatangan, Sabah in 2012, and archaeological restoration and conservation assessment projects at Protestant cemetery site, Penang in 2013.

In terms of publication, his research findings have mostly been published in Sarawak Museum Journals, Sabah Society Journals, Malaysia Journal of Archaeology as well as chapter in books, monographs, proceedings and conference papers.

Currently, his research concentrates on the cultural connections between past and present pottery in Peninsular Malaysia particularly on pottery technology, trade and exchange as well as the migration of Malay potters from Kelantan to Pahang in the 15th and 16th centuries. He is co-supervising one MA and two PhD students in the field of ethnography, ethnoarchaeology and archaeotourism.
